  Protecting Linux against automated attackers
Linux.com - 22 September 2005
As many systems administrators will tell you, attacks from automated login scripts specifically targeting common account names with weak passwords have become a substantial threat to system security, especially via SSH (a popular program that allows remote users to log in to a Linux computer and execute commands locally). Here are some common-sense rules to follow that can greatly improve security, as well as several scripts to cut down on the computing resources wasted by these attacks.

Why there is an increasing need for collaborative server monitoring
IT Manager's Journal - 12 July 2005
No man, woman, or server is an island. When it comes to solving organizational IT problems, such as those facing systems administrators on a daily basis, this is becoming increasingly apparent. Many organizations require a number of servers to run their business, and employ a cadre of IT professionals to keep these servers up and running. To accomplish this, each team member often needs to work with others on a regular basis. This has never been easy, because geographic differences and bureaucracy quickly set in, often miring efforts from the start. Collaborative software solutions, especially ones focused on systems administrators, may be the answer.

  Linux System Inventory Script
I have written a Perl script to get the hardware inventory of a Linux system. Download it here.

Draconis Software
I'm a cofounder of an independent software development company working on an enterprise network management product named RSP. We've built a company that embraces open source and is designed by IT professionals for IT professionals - hopefully a breath of fresh air in the industry.
