RSP version 2.3 is out

RSPWe’ve been working on updating our network monitoring and management software RSP to version 2.3. This release focuses on making it easier for new users to start using the software (especially for those who aren’t necessarily interested in setting up a full-blown monitoring infrastructure). If you haven’t tried it out yet, download the trial version and let us know what you think! We’re constantly looking for feedback on our efforts.

Most of the changes will be especially visible to Windows users who’ve never used RSP before. For one, the RSP monitoring agent (the program responsible for collecting information about your computer) now has a handy status window (see screenshot). The idea is to show the current status of your computer (such as CPU/Memory usage, network bandwidth statistics, and all sorts of other information) without having to load it into the RPS Web interface. It’s no longer necessary to actually start up (and connect to) the web interface to view details of your local computer.

Additionally, we’ve added a button for launching the web interface (and a splash screen), which should make it a little more intuitive for new users. I think one of the biggest sources of confusion is figuring out which RSP application you need to run to get started. Before version 2.3, you needed to first launch the RSP agent, then start the web interface in order to view details of your computer. Now, you just need to launch the RSP agent, and can optionally start up the web interface as well (especially for situations where you have multiple computers you’d like to monitor at the same time, etc).

We’ve also done away with the “enterprise” and “personal” editions of the software. These have always been essentially the same programs. We’ve consolidated everything into a single version, which works in either trial mode or registered mode (when you buy a license key). There’s no longer any distinction between users who can use the personal vs. enterprise editions.

And finally, we’ve included numerous bug fixes and other minor updates to the entire project.

We hope you find the software useful, and as always, leave us your comments – we’d love to hear it.
